Can a South Korean Drive in Hungary? — IDP Recommended + Zero Alcohol

For a South Korean visitor, Hungary is an easier drive than much of Europe in one respect — there’s no left-to-right switch, since Korea already drives on the right. The adjustments are in the paperwork and the rules, and two of them deserve attention.

The verdict: yes, with an IDP

A South Korean licence holder can drive in Hungary, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry alongside it. Police don’t always ask, but rental desks generally do, and the IDP provides the standardised translation that keeps any check brief. Sort it in Korea before you fly — it can’t be issued in Hungary.

The good news on the road itself: Hungary drives on the right, the same as South Korea, so there’s no side switch to relearn at junctions or roundabouts.

A zero alcohol limit

This is the rule most likely to catch a Korean driver out. Hungary runs a 0.0 BAC limit — stricter than South Korea’s 0.03, and absolute. There is no allowance for a single drink with a meal. Treat it as a flat no before driving; enforcement is routine and penalties are serious.

The e-vignette — buy it first

Hungarian motorways aren’t tolled at booths. They require an electronic vignette (e-matrica) registered to your number plate, bought in advance online or at a filling station. There’s nothing to stop and pay at, so it’s on you to have it before you join a motorway — the plate-reading cameras catch anyone without one.
