Hungary on a Polish Licence — No IDP, Zero Alcohol, Lower Motorway Limit

Hungary is a short hop for Polish drivers and one of the simplest crossings to make by car — same side of the road, a licence that works without a permit, and a vignette system you’ll already recognise. A couple of numbers shift, though, so it’s worth a quick read before you go.

The verdict: your Polish licence is enough

A Polish licence is valid in Hungary with no IDP required. As an EU document it’s recognised directly, so you bring your licence and passport and that’s all the paperwork the law asks for. Driving is on the right, exactly as at home.

The motorway limit drops

Here’s a difference Polish drivers feel quickly: Hungary caps its motorways at 130 km/h, while Poland allows 140. It’s only 10 km/h, but it’s enough that habits from home will tip you over. Zero alcohol — stricter than Poland

Poland is already strict at 0.02 BAC, but Hungary goes to a flat 0.0. The practical difference is small, but the message is absolute: nothing alcoholic before driving, full stop.

The e-vignette

Like Poland, Hungary controls motorway access with an electronic vignette (e-matrica) linked to your plate rather than toll booths.
