Hungary on a Norwegian Licence — No IDP, but Zero Alcohol & an E-Vignette

For a Norwegian driver, Hungary is straightforward on the things that usually cause trouble abroad — your licence is valid, the side of the road is the same, and the strict alcohol culture matches home. The one genuinely new step is how you pay for the motorways.

The verdict: your EEA licence is enough

A Norwegian licence is valid in Hungary with no IDP required. As an EEA document it’s recognised directly, so you carry your licence and passport and skip the permit entirely. Driving is on the right, exactly as in Norway, so there’s no side switch to relearn.

Alcohol: familiar territory

Hungary enforces a 0.0 BAC limit. Coming from Norway’s 0.02, this is no culture shock at all — you already drive on the basis that any alcohol is too much, and Hungary simply makes that explicit. Keep the same discipline you keep at home and you’ll never have a problem.

The e-vignette is the part that’s actually different

This is the bit to plan for. Hungarian motorways aren’t tolled at booths — they require an electronic vignette (e-matrica) registered to your number plate, bought in advance online or at a filling station. There’s nothing to stop and pay at, so the responsibility is entirely yours: have the vignette before you join the motorway, or the plate-reading cameras will catch you and issue a fine. Speed limits are 50 in town, 90 rural and 130 on the motorway — higher than Norway’s 110, so it’s easy to drift over on the open road. A 10 km/h overspeed costs about HUF 30,000 (≈ EUR 75).
