Quick Answer

Yes — a Japanese licence holder can drive in Hungary, with an IDP recommended. Three things change at once: Hungary drives on the right (Japan drives on the left), the alcohol limit is a flat zero, and you need an e-vignette before any motorway.

Hungary is a rewarding self-drive country and the central-European road network makes it easy to reach. For a Japanese visitor, though, three separate things change the moment you take the wheel — and none of them is the licence itself.

The verdict: yes, with an IDP

A Japanese licence holder can drive in Hungary, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to go alongside it. Police don’t always ask, but rental desks generally do, and the IDP provides the standardised translation that smooths any check. Sort it in Japan before you travel — you can’t obtain one once you arrive.

Change one: Hungary drives on the right

This is the adjustment most likely to catch you. Japan drives on the left; Hungary drives on the right. Every reflex at a junction, a roundabout or a car-park exit is now mirrored, and the first hour is when slips happen. Collect the car away from central Budapest if you can, and stay deliberate at every turn until right-hand traffic feels natural.

Change two: a zero alcohol limit

Hungary runs a 0.0 BAC drink-drive limit, stricter than Japan’s 0.03. There is no allowance whatsoever — not a beer, not a glass of wine. Treat it as an absolute no before driving; enforcement is routine.

Change three: the e-vignette

Hungarian motorways aren’t tolled at booths — they need an electronic vignette (e-matrica) registered to your plate, bought in advance online or at a filling station. If your rental doesn’t already include one, you must arrange it before joining a motorway, or the plate-reading system will catch you. Our vignette countries guide covers how it works.

Speeds are 50 in town, 90 rural, 130 on the motorway — higher than Japan’s, so watch your pace; a 10 km/h overspeed runs about HUF 30,000 (≈ EUR 75). Read the full Hungary driving guide and confirm your documents with the Driving Permit Checker before you set off. Hungary’s emergency number is 112.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Hungary accepts your Japanese licence for tourist visits, and an IDP is recommended to carry with it, especially for the rental desk. Arrange the IDP in Japan; it can't be issued locally.

Check if your licence is valid

No. Japan drives on the left and Hungary on the right, so your junction and roundabout reflexes are reversed. Treat your first hour as the danger window and pick the car up somewhere quiet.

Zero. Hungary enforces a 0.0 BAC limit, stricter than Japan's 0.03 — there is no margin at all, so don't drink anything before driving.
