Hungary on an Italian Licence — No IDP, but Zero Alcohol & an E-Vignette

For an Italian driver, Hungary is an easy place to rent and go — your licence works without a permit and the side of the road is the same. Two local rules, though, are stricter than Italy’s, and one of them can cost you before you’ve left the slip road.

The verdict: your Italian licence is enough

An Italian licence is valid in Hungary with no IDP required. As an EU document it’s recognised directly, so you carry your licence and passport and that’s the legal side done. Driving is on the right, as at home, so there’s nothing to relearn at junctions.

The zero limit that catches Italians out

Here’s the real change: Hungary runs a 0.0 BAC drink-drive limit. Italy lets you have a small amount — Hungary lets you have none. The relaxed lunch-with-wine habit that’s normal at home is a genuine offence here, and enforcement is routine. Treat it as a flat no: nothing alcoholic before you drive.

The e-vignette — buy it before the motorway

Hungary’s motorways are vignette-controlled, not tolled at booths. You need an electronic vignette (e-matrica) registered to your number plate before you join a motorway — there’s nothing to stop at on the road, so it’s entirely on you to have bought it in advance, online or at a filling station. Speed limits mirror Italy — 50 in town, 90 rural, 130 on the motorway — so there’s no adjustment there, though Budapest’s one-way systems and tram lanes reward patience. A typical 10 km/h overspeed costs around HUF 30,000 (≈ EUR 75).
