Quick Answer

Your Irish licence is valid in Hungary with no IDP — but two things catch Irish drivers out. Hungary uses an electronic motorway vignette you buy before you drive (no toll booths to stop you), and the drink-drive limit is an absolute 0.0, down from 0.05 at home. You also swap to right-hand traffic.

The paperwork for an Irish driver in Hungary is genuinely simple — your licence is enough, no permit, no fuss. The thing that actually trips people up is something Ireland doesn’t have at all: you have to buy a motorway pass before you touch the road, and there’s no booth to remind you.

Hungary runs an electronic vignette (e-matrica). It’s tied to your number plate, so there are no toll gates anywhere — you just drive onto the M1, M5 or M7, and a camera reads your plate. If you haven’t bought the pass beforehand, the fine arrives by post, typically HUF 30,000 (around EUR 75). Buy a 10-day or weekly e-vignette online or at any petrol station before you join a motorway; rental cars are not always covered, so check with the desk and our Hungary vignette guide for the current price bands.

The second adjustment is the side of the road. Ireland drives on the left, Hungary on the right, and the riskiest moment is your first hour — leaving the rental lot, taking a roundabout the opposite way, or glancing the wrong direction at a junction. Keep your first drive off Budapest’s tram-laced boulevards if you can; the city mixes one-way systems with cyclists and is the part most Irish visitors find stressful.

Then there’s alcohol. Ireland allows 0.05; Hungary is a flat 0.0. There is no “one pint with dinner” margin, and roadside breath tests are routine. If you’re driving, drink nothing.

Speeds are higher than home in one place: motorways run to 130 km/h (versus Ireland’s 120), with 90 on rural roads and 50 in towns. Outside the motorways the surface quality varies, so read the road rather than the sign. A typical 10-over speeding ticket is in the HUF 30,000 range too — you can sanity-check the maths with our speeding fine calculator.

Before you set off, fuel sits around $1.52/litre, the emergency number is 112, and you’ll want offline maps for the rural east. Read the full rules on our Hungary driving guide, and if any fine does land, our guide to who pays driving fines abroad explains how rental companies pass them on.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Ireland is in the EU, so your Irish licence is accepted on its own across Hungary for tourist stays. Carry your passport and the rental documents too.

Hungary uses an electronic e-vignette linked to your number plate — there are no toll booths. Buy it online or at a petrol station before you join a motorway, or you face an HUF 30,000 (about EUR 75) penalty by post.

Zero. Hungary enforces an absolute 0.0 limit, stricter than Ireland's 0.05, so do not drink anything at all before driving.
