Carry an IDP with your Indian licence, switch to right-hand traffic, buy an e-matrica before any motorway (HUF 6,900 for 10 days) and drink nothing: Hungary's limit is zero.
Hungary asks four things of an Indian driver, and sorting them before arrival saves both stress and money.
Paperwork first
A non-EU licence can be used in Hungary for the first year after arrival, as long as an International Driving Permit or a certified Hungarian translation goes with it. The IDP is the easier route: India and Hungary are both parties to the 1949 Geneva convention, and the permit is issued in India before you fly. The side of the road
India drives on the left; Hungary on the right. Mistakes happen on the first day: pulling out of a fuel station, taking a roundabout that now flows anticlockwise, glancing the wrong way at a junction. Give yourself a quiet first hour away from central Budapest. Limits are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h outside them and 130 km/h on motorways.
The e-matrica
Hungarian motorways have no toll booths. You buy an e-matrica, an electronic vignette linked to your number plate, before you drive on, and cameras check the plate. For a car in 2026 the 10-day national pass costs HUF 6,900. The cheaper annual county pass covers the tolled roads of one county only, which a Budapest-Balaton run already exceeds. Driving uncovered brings a HUF 27,790 surcharge if paid within 60 days, HUF 95,730 after that. In a rental, ask whether the pass is included. Zero alcohol
Hungary allows no alcohol at the wheel, below India’s 0.03%, and police breath-test at routine road checks. If you are driving, you do not drink. The emergency number is 112, and the Hungary driving guide has the full rules.
