Hungary on an Indian Licence — IDP, the Side Switch & a Zero Limit

Hungary is a rewarding self-drive country for Indian travellers, but it asks for four specific adjustments, and getting them clear before you arrive saves both stress and money.

Start with the road itself, because it is the biggest one: Hungary drives on the right, India on the left. The first day is where mistakes happen — pulling out of a fuel station, taking a roundabout that now flows the other way, or glancing the wrong direction at a junction. Give yourself a quiet first hour, well away from central Budapest, which is demanding traffic for anyone. The third change is the one nobody expects: there are no toll booths on Hungarian motorways. You pay through an electronic vignette bought before you drive on, linked to your number plate, available online or at petrol stations near the border. The fourth is alcohol, and it is absolute. Hungary runs a 0.00 BAC limit — zero — below India’s 0.03. There is no margin for a single drink, roadside breath testing is routine, and penalties are serious. If you are driving, you don’t drink.

The remaining numbers are mild. Motorways are 130 km/h, towns 50, rural roads 90, and speeding around 10 km/h over costs roughly HUF 30,000 (about EUR 75), with cameras common.
