Hungary on a Chinese Licence — E-Vignette Before the Motorway, Zero Alcohol

Hungary is an easy, rewarding drive for a visitor from China, but two rules differ sharply from home and both can cost you before you’ve left the rental car park: how you pay for the motorway, and what counts as drink-driving.

There are no toll booths — buy the e-vignette first

Hungarian motorways are paid through an electronic e-vignette (matrica) tied to your licence plate. You will never see a booth or a barrier; cameras simply check whether your plate is registered as paid. That means you must buy the vignette before you drive onto an M-road — online or at any petrol-station counter — or the system issues a fine automatically. Zero alcohol, strictly

Hungary runs a 0.00 BAC limit with no margin — stricter than China’s 0.02. Roadside breath tests are routine, and there is no allowance for a single drink. Keep alcohol and driving entirely separate for the whole trip.

Licence, speeds and fines

China sits outside the EU, so an International Driving Permit is required with your Chinese licence; sort it at home, as it can’t be issued in Hungary — check it on the Driving Permit Checker. Limits are 130 km/h on motorways, 90 rural and 50 in towns, with fixed and mobile cameras. A 10 km/h-over ticket is about HUF 30,000 (≈ €75), and cars must carry a warning triangle, reflective vest and first-aid kit. Petrol is roughly $1.52/litre and the emergency number is 112.
