Hungary on an Austrian Licence — The Vignette Switch & Zero Alcohol

Crossing from Austria into Hungary is about as smooth as European driving gets — you stay on the right, the motorway limit is the same 130 km/h, your EU licence needs no IDP, and the signs follow the familiar pattern. Which is exactly why two small differences trip people up: they expect everything to carry over, and two things don’t.

The first is the vignette. Austria runs its own digital vignette, and it is easy to assume it stretches across the border — it does not. Hungary needs a separate Hungarian e-vignette, bought before you join a motorway, online or at a petrol station near the crossing, and linked to your number plate. The second is alcohol. Hungary enforces an absolute 0.00 BAC limit — zero — where Austria allows 0.05. That half-glass margin you might rely on at home does not exist across the border, breath testing at the roadside is routine, and the penalties are serious. Everything else is reassuringly close to home.
