Can an American Drive in Hong Kong? — Yes Short-Term, but You Switch to the Left

Most visitors to Hong Kong never touch a steering wheel — the MTR and ferries cover the territory far better than a car does, and parking is scarce and costly. But if you do plan to drive, perhaps to reach the quieter parts of the New Territories or Lantau, the rules differ from home in ways worth knowing before you commit.

Can an American drive on a US licence?

Yes, for a short-term visit your US licence is accepted, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry alongside it. The arrangement is built for tourists; if you were settling for longer you’d need to convert to a Hong Kong licence. Sort the IDP at home before you fly — it isn’t available on arrival.

Two things to retrain: the side, and your alcohol maths

Hong Kong drives on the left, the opposite of the United States. In dense city traffic that side switch is unforgiving, so if you can, take your first drive somewhere quieter than Kowloon before tackling tunnels and flyovers. The alcohol limit is a strict 0.05 BAC, below the 0.08 used in most US states, and enforcement is serious — treat it as zero before you drive.

Fuel is the eye-watering part

Hong Kong has some of the most expensive petrol in the world, around $2.80 a litre — well over double typical US prices. Combined with limited, pricey parking, it’s part of why a rental rarely pays off for a short stay unless you’re specifically heading somewhere transit doesn’t reach.
