Yes, you can drive to Honduras from the United States. The road goes through Mexico and Guatemala, there is no ferry leg, and every country on the way keeps traffic on the right. Once you cross into Honduras, two things change: the legal alcohol limit drops to 0.07, and the roads become the main hazard. The U.S. State Department sums up the problem in one line: crime, poor road conditions and heavy commercial truck traffic make driving in Honduras dangerous.

The overland route, and what it asks of you
Driving down is a multi-border trip, not a weekend run. You need paperwork for Mexico and Guatemala as well as Honduras, and the Driving Permit Checker covers both transit countries. Most travellers who search this route end up flying to Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula or Roatán and renting locally, which removes two border crossings and the question of bringing a US-plated car home again.
If you do take your own vehicle, read one detail in the State Department’s page before you go. Honduras and the US have a Stolen Vehicle Treaty, but Honduran law protects buyers who acted in good faith, even when the car turns out to be stolen. A vehicle taken from you in Honduras may never come back. The department suggests checking cover with your insurer or the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Honduras accepts a valid foreign licence for a short stay. The Canadian government tells its drivers they may use their home licence for up to 3 months, and the UK Foreign Office gives British photocard holders the same window. The State Department’s list for Americans is short: your driver’s license, copies of your passport and the vehicle registration, carried every time you drive.
The International Driving Permit is about the rental desk, not the roadside. The UK advice notes that hire companies often set stricter terms, such as a minimum age, a year of driving experience and an IDP. You can only get the permit at home, so buy it before you fly.
Daylight only, and why
The U.S. Embassy discourages car and bus travel after dark. The reasons are listed plainly: roads are poorly lit and poorly marked, signs are often missing, drivers do not always switch on headlights, and people and animals walk into the road. The Canadian and UK pages say the same. In practice, that means an early start and a hotel booked where you will arrive by late afternoon.
Weather adds a second clock. Rockslides are common in the rainy season, May through December, and can close major highways.
Stretches the State Department names
Four parts of the network get a specific warning:
- Tegucigalpa to Choluteca: mountain curves and potholes, with more landslides in the wet months.
- El Progreso to La Ceiba: bridges and road surface damaged by regular flooding, and little or no lighting.
- San Pedro Sula to Tela, especially near the palm plantations around El Progreso: carjackings and robberies aimed at SUVs, usually at night.
- Olancho: stay on the main Tegucigalpa–Juticalpa–Catacamas road. The side routes toward Telica, Gualaco, San Esteban and Bonito Oriental see violence between rival groups, and phone coverage is weak.
Global Affairs Canada adds a warning that criminals sometimes pose as police. A genuine checkpoint has a police vehicle, green cones and at least five officers. Outside the main corridors a 4x4 may be needed.
A 0.07 limit, below the US 0.08
The WHO’s 2023 country profile lists a blood-alcohol limit of 0.07 g/dl for all drivers. On paper that is a small step down from the 0.08 most American drivers know. In practice there is no safe amount to plan around, so treat any drink as the end of driving for the day.
After a collision
Dial 911, the same number as at home; in Honduras it reaches the Transit Authority, known as Transito. Do not move the car. Honduran law requires every vehicle involved to stay where it is until Transito agents arrive. Then call your insurer as soon as you can, ideally from the scene. The UK advice adds that drivers in serious accidents may be taken into custody whoever was at fault, so have the embassy’s number saved.
