Can an Indian Drive in Honduras? — IDP Recommended + the Side Switch

Honduras rewards a self-drive trip — the Caribbean coast, the Copán ruins and the highland coffee country are all far easier with your own car than on patchy bus links. The licence question is the easy bit. The two things that actually catch Indian visitors are the side of the road and a drink-drive limit that is stricter than India’s.

Can an Indian licence holder drive here?

Yes. You can drive in Honduras on your Indian licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended — not always demanded at the kerb, but rental desks and traffic police expect to see one. Carry the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport as a set, and sort the IDP at home; you cannot obtain one once you have landed. For a tourist trip of a few weeks the foreign-licence allowance is comfortable.

The side switch is the real hurdle

India drives on the left; Honduras drives on the right. That single reversal is what trips up Indian drivers, and the risk window is your first day — pulling out of a fuel station, taking a roundabout that now flows the other way, or a reflex glance to the wrong side at a junction. Pick up the car somewhere quiet rather than in central Tegucigalpa or San Pedro Sula traffic, and stay deliberate at every turn until “right” stops feeling wrong.

Alcohol limit and speeds

The blood-alcohol limit is 0.07. India’s own limit of 0.03 is already strict, so the honest rule here is simply not to drink and drive — enforcement on the spot can be inconsistent, and a dispute is the last thing you want as a visitor. Posted speeds run to 40 km/h in towns, 60 on rural roads and 90 km/h on the main highways, but condition matters more than the sign: away from the trunk routes you will meet potholes, unlit vehicles after dark and livestock, so drive to the road rather than the limit.
