Can an Indian Drive in Haiti? — IDP Recommended + the Right-Side Switch

Driving yourself around Haiti is a serious undertaking, and the paperwork is the smallest part of it. For an Indian visitor the two adjustments that matter are the side of the road and the pace — Haitian roads are slow for a reason.

Can you drive on an Indian licence?

Yes. An Indian licence holder can drive in Haiti on a foreign licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended — rental agencies and police prefer to see one alongside your Indian licence and passport. The IDP is simply the recognised translation of your existing licence, so sort it in India before you fly; you cannot get one in Port-au-Prince.

The biggest change: switching to the right

India drives on the left; Haiti drives on the right. This is the single thing most likely to trip you up, and the danger window is your first day — pulling out of a forecourt, joining a junction, or glancing the wrong way out of habit. The driver sits on the left and you overtake on the left. Give yourself a slow, deliberate start away from city traffic until “keep right” feels automatic.

Low limits because the roads demand it

Posted limits are 40 km/h in town, 60 km/h on rural roads and around 80 km/h on the best stretches. Those are not generous numbers, and conditions justify them: outside the main routes you meet broken surfaces, unmarked hazards, heavy pedestrian and tap-tap traffic, and very little lighting after dark. Drive to what you can see, keep speeds well down, and avoid night driving on unfamiliar roads.

Carry your Indian licence, IDP and passport together. The local drink-drive limit sits at 0.08, but enforcement and road risk make a strict “don’t drink and drive” the only sensible rule here.
