Can a British licence holder drive in Guyana? Yes — your UK licence is accepted for tourist driving, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry alongside it. There is a genuine piece of good news that sets this corridor apart from most: Guyana, like the UK, drives on the left. For once a British driver does not have to unlearn every instinct on day one — the side of the road, the roundabout direction and the seating position all match home.

That removes the usual headline hazard, but it does not make Guyana an effortless drive. Almost all of the activity and almost all of the traffic sit on the coastal strip around Georgetown, where the road is paved but busy, narrow in places, and shared with cyclists, pedestrians and slow-moving vehicles. The town limit is a low 40 km/h, rural roads are posted at 80, and the few faster stretches at 100 — keep to those, because surfaces vary and enforcement does happen.

Head inland and the picture changes quickly. Beyond the coast many routes are unsealed laterite that turns slick and rutted in the rainy season, river crossings can mean a ferry or pontoon rather than a bridge, and fuel stops become sparse. This is four-wheel-drive country once you leave the populated belt, and a journey that looks short on a map can take most of a day.

The drink-drive limit is 0.08, the same as the UK, but the safest policy on unfamiliar, variable roads is none at all before driving. Fuel costs around $1.08 a litre, and you should top up before any inland leg rather than assume the next station is open. The emergency number in Guyana is 911, not the 112 you may be used to in Europe, so save it before you set off.
