Can an Indian Drive in Guernsey? — IDP Recommended, but No Side Switch

Guernsey is a small Crown Dependency in the Channel Islands, just off the French coast but British in its road rules. For an Indian visitor the standout feature is what you do not have to relearn: the side of the road is the same as home, which makes this one of the gentler places to take the wheel abroad.

The verdict for Indian licence holders

You can drive in Guernsey as a visitor on your Indian licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it — rental desks in particular like to see the certified translation alongside your home licence and passport. Sort the IDP in India before you travel, since you cannot obtain one on the island, and keep your documents together. Rental companies may also set their own minimum-age and experience conditions, so check the agreement.

The hurdle that does not apply: the side of the road

India drives on the left, and so does Guernsey. There is no side switch to relearn — roundabouts, junctions and overtaking all run the way your instincts already expect. That removes the single most dangerous adjustment that catches drivers in mainland Europe, and it is the main reason Guernsey feels easy for an Indian visitor.

What actually needs care: the lanes

The real challenge is scale. Guernsey’s roads are narrow and often hemmed in by granite walls and hedges, with tight bends, frequent junctions and very modest distances between them. Take it gently, yield early where the road narrows, and watch for the local “filter in turn” priority system at some junctions, which works on courtesy rather than signals.
