An American licence holder can drive in Guatemala on their US licence for a normal tourist visit. What stays familiar

Two things work in your favour. Guatemala drives on the right, the same as home, so there is no side switch to unlearn at every junction. And the blood-alcohol limit is 0.08, the same line most US states use — though with mountain roads and unlit vehicles after dark, treating it as zero is the smart call.

What actually changes: speed and surface

The numbers tell the story. The town limit is 40 km/h and rural roads are capped at 60 — far lower than a US driver expects, and the roads earn it. Away from the main highways you will meet potholes, blind curves on volcano roads, speed bumps without warning, and slow trucks you cannot safely pass. The motorway-grade routes run to 100 km/h, but they are the exception, not the rule. Drive to the road in front of you and budget far more time than the distance suggests.
