Grenada is small, green and steep, and a hire car is the natural way to reach its beaches and nutmeg-country villages. For an Indian driver the side of the road is the easy part. The licence step is the one to plan.
Licence first: the temporary Grenadian licence
The UK government’s advice is blunt: visitors must have a temporary Grenadian driving licence, and the car hire company will help you get one. Global Affairs Canada adds where to buy it: from a car rental agency or the central police station in St George’s, by showing your valid home licence. Your Indian licence is the document you show; the local licence is the one that makes you legal.
Hire firms can ask for more than the law does. The UK government notes that some want a year of driving experience, a higher minimum age or an IDP. An Indian IDP comes only from your RTO, so if your chosen firm asks for one, sort it before you fly and get the firm’s conditions in writing. No side switch, but demanding roads
Grenada drives on the left, exactly like India, so there is no mirror-image adjustment at junctions. What needs care is the terrain. Canada describes road conditions as poor, with most roads narrow and winding, and the UK government warns of blind corners on rural roads. Pedestrians often walk in the road, and night driving needs extra caution. Take descents slowly and give buses room.
Alcohol and emergencies
India’s limit is 30 mg per 100 ml of blood. In Grenada, on roads this narrow and this dark at night, plan on drinking nothing before driving. Police and fire are on 911; for an ambulance, call 434 for the general hospital in St George’s.
