Can an American Drive in Gibraltar? — Yes, on a US Licence, and It Drives on the Right

Gibraltar is one of the easier overseas drives an American can take on, mostly because almost nothing about the licensing or the driving side works against you. The catch is the opposite of what people assume: the problem here is not rules, it is space.

Can you drive on a US licence? Yes

An American licence holder can drive in Gibraltar on their US licence for a normal tourist stay. There is no legal requirement to hold an International Driving Permit. That said, if you are renting — or driving on into mainland Spain, which most visitors do — a rental desk or insurer may still ask for an IDP, so it is worth carrying one and confirming with the Driving Permit Checker. The thing that surprises people: Gibraltar drives on the right

This is the genuinely useful fact. Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory, so most visitors brace for left-hand traffic. It does not have it. Gibraltar drives on the right, the same as the United States and the same as Spain next door. For an American that removes the single biggest hazard of European-territory driving. The flip side is that the moment you cross the land border into Spain, nothing about the side of the road changes — you simply continue.

The real challenge is the size, not the rules

Gibraltar is roughly a few square kilometres wrapped around a rock, with a dense, narrow street grid and constant congestion near the frontier and the town centre. Many visitors find it easier to park and walk, or to leave the car in Spain and cross on foot. If you do drive, expect tight lanes, frequent stops, and a runway you cross at ground level — the airport road is shared with the active runway, which is a quirk worth knowing before you meet it.

The blood-alcohol limit is 0.08, the same line as most US states, and it is enforced on a small network where there is nowhere to hide. Treat it as zero before driving.
