The danger window is the first hour: pulling out of a junction, judging a gap, glancing the wrong way before you step off a kerb as a pedestrian. Alcohol and enforcement

Gibraltar’s drink-drive limit is 0.08 — the same number used in England and Wales. That is not licence to have a drink and drive: the town is small, distances are short, and police presence around the centre and the frontier is constant. The simplest rule on a day trip is to keep alcohol for after the car is parked.

Speeds and the practical picture

Gibraltar publishes no single open-road speed figure in our data, and in practice the whole territory is low-speed urban driving — there is no motorway and nowhere to build up real pace.
