Ghana Driving 2026: IDP Required, 0.08 Limit, Triangle Kit

For an American, Ghana removes the one thing that rattles most first-time drivers in West Africa: you stay on the right-hand side, the same as home. That makes the learning curve about road conditions and one extra document rather than retraining your reflexes at every junction. Accra traffic is dense and assertive, but the rules themselves are not exotic.

The licence rule: international or Ghanaian

The U.S. State Department’s country page says: “Drivers must possess an international driver’s license (available from AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance) or a Ghanaian driver’s license.” For a visitor that means an International Driving Permit next to your US licence. Get it before you fly, and keep the IDP, licence and passport together for the police checkpoints on intercity roads. The same page warns that driving after dark outside the major cities is extremely hazardous, and that the Accra to Cape Coast highway sees many accidents.

No side switch — the adjustments are elsewhere

Ghana drives on the right, exactly as you do, so there’s no left-hand relearning. The alcohol limit is 0.08 BAC, the same ceiling most US states use — but enforcement and road conditions mean a genuinely sober drive is the only sensible policy, especially after dark when unlit vehicles and pedestrians are common away from the cities.

Required equipment — this one is checked

Unlike home, Ghana legally requires your car to carry a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher, and roadside checks do enforce it. Confirm all three are present before you drive a rental off the lot; arguing the point at a checkpoint is the slow way to learn they were missing.

Speeds, fuel and getting set up

Town limits sit at 50 km/h, rural roads at 80 km/h, and the few motorway stretches at 100 km/h — drive to the surface, which varies widely once you leave the main corridors.
