For an American, Ghana removes the one thing that rattles most first-time drivers in West Africa: you stay on the right-hand side, the same as home. That makes the learning curve about road conditions and paperwork rather than retraining your reflexes at every junction. Accra traffic is dense and assertive, but the rules themselves are not exotic.

Can an American drive on a US licence?

Yes. For a tourist stay your US licence is accepted, and an International Driving Permit is strongly advised. It isn’t always demanded, but rental companies often require it, and at the police checkpoints you’ll meet on intercity roads an IDP your licence and passport together make for a much shorter conversation. Get the IDP before you fly — it can’t be issued locally.

No side switch — the adjustments are elsewhere

Town limits sit at 50 km/h, rural roads at 80 km/h, and the few motorway stretches at 100 km/h — drive to the surface, which varies widely once you leave the main corridors.
