Germany on an Indian Licence — the Autobahn, the Side Switch & the Green Sticker

Germany is one of the most rewarding countries an Indian driver can take on — superb roads, clear signage, disciplined traffic — but it asks for three specific adjustments, and the order they catch you out in matters.

The first is the side switch. India drives on the left; Germany drives on the right. The danger isn’t the open road, it’s the reflexes — pulling out of a petrol station, taking a roundabout that now flows the other way, the instinctive glance toward the wrong shoulder. Spend your first hour on quiet roads rather than in central Munich or Berlin, and check both ways deliberately at every junction until it stops feeling reversed.

The second is the one everyone comes for: the Autobahn. On many stretches there is genuinely no general speed limit — only an advisory 130 km/h — and traffic in the left lane moves very fast. The etiquette is strict and unforgiving: keep right unless overtaking, never undertake, check your mirror twice before pulling out because a car that was a dot is on you in seconds, and move back right the instant you’ve passed. Crucially, large sections are limited by signs and electronic gantries, often for roadworks or weather, and those limits are heavily camera-enforced — a modest overspeed in a limited zone costs around EUR 30. Read the overhead signs constantly; the limit changes without warning.

The third is the quiet trap. Almost every German city centre is a low-emission zone (Umweltzone) that requires an Umweltplakette — a green windscreen sticker — to enter. There’s no barrier; you simply cross the boundary, and driving in without the right sticker risks a fine. The rest is straightforward. The alcohol limit is 0.05 (zero for drivers in their first two years, so newer licences should drive completely dry), rural roads run to 100, towns 50, and winter tyres are mandatory in wintry conditions — rentals come fitted.
