French drivers need no IDP in Germany — your EU licence is valid. Two things differ from home: on derestricted Autobahn stretches traffic legally exceeds 130, so the left lane is for overtaking only and undertaking is forbidden; and to drive into almost any German city centre you need an Umweltplakette emission sticker, with an 80 EUR fine for going without.
For a French driver, Germany asks almost nothing of you on paper: same side of the road, EU licence accepted, no IDP, alcohol limit identical at 0.05. The differences are cultural and they live in two places — the Autobahn and the city boundary. Get those right and the rest is familiar.
The Autobahn rewards discipline, not bravado
The famous derestricted stretches are real, but they aren’t an invitation to floor it. The point that catches French drivers is lane discipline: where there’s no limit, a car can appear in your mirror and close at well over 200 km/h, so the left lane is strictly for overtaking and you must move back right the moment you’ve passed. Undertaking — passing on the right — is illegal and treated seriously. Many sections do carry posted limits with cameras, and tailgating is a fineable offence, so resist the urge to crowd a slower car ahead. Treat the left lane as a passing lane you borrow, not one you occupy.
You can’t enter most cities without a sticker
This is the one that costs people money. Almost every German city centre is an Umweltzone (low-emission zone), and you may only drive in with a valid Umweltplakette — the coloured emission sticker fixed to the windscreen. Nearly all zones now require the green sticker. Drive into Berlin, Munich, Cologne or Stuttgart without one and the fine is around €100, regardless of how clean your car actually is. On the road
Limits are 50 in town and 100 on rural roads where not otherwise signed; a basic speeding fine starts at just €20–30 but climbs steeply, and cameras are everywhere. Winter tyres in Germany — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Germany sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF only — the M+S transitional rule no longer applies to cars (StVZO §36(4))
- Studded tyres: banned
- Penalty: EUR 60 + 1 point; EUR 80 if you obstruct traffic; EUR 75 for the vehicle owner
In German the rule is Winterreifenpflicht, and snow chains are Schneeketten — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

On many stretches there's an advisory 130 km/h but no enforced limit, so cars close from behind very fast in the left lane. Plenty of sections do have posted limits and cameras. The rule that matters: keep right except to overtake, and never pass on the right.
