Austrian licence holders need no IDP in Germany and drive on the same right-hand side. The one genuine change is the Autobahn — Austria caps motorways at 130 km/h everywhere, while many German stretches are derestricted, so closing speeds in the left lane are far higher than you're used to.
For Austrian drivers, Germany is the easiest border crossing there is — same side of the road, same alcohol limit, same EU licence, and no vignette to buy on German motorways. Almost everything transfers. The exception sits on the Autobahn, and it’s worth taking seriously.
What carries over without a thought
Your Austrian EU licence is fully valid in Germany with no International Driving Permit and no time cap for normal trips — just carry it with your passport. Germany also drops the thing you’re used to paying for at home: there is no general car vignette on German motorways, so you can roll across the border and onto the Autobahn without a sticker or toll for an ordinary car. The drink-drive limit is 0.05, identical to Austria.
The Autobahn is the real adjustment
Austria caps every motorway at 130 km/h and enforces it. Germany doesn’t. On many Autobahn stretches that 130 is only a recommendation, so a car can legally bear down on you at 200 km/h in the left lane. The habit that matters: stay right unless actively overtaking, and check your mirror twice before pulling out, because the closing speed is far greater than anything an Austrian limit prepares you for. Plenty of sections — near cities and roadworks — are signed and camera-enforced at 100 to 130, where a 10 km/h overspeed costs around EUR 30 in town. Winter tyres in Germany — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Germany sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF only — the M+S transitional rule no longer applies to cars (StVZO §36(4))
- Studded tyres: banned
- Penalty: EUR 60 + 1 point; EUR 80 if you obstruct traffic; EUR 75 for the vehicle owner
