Gabon 2026: Two Licences to Carry, US and International

Gabon is mostly rainforest, and that single fact shapes everything about driving there. For an American visitor the licence question has a two-document answer and the side of the road is familiar — the work is in choosing the right vehicle and reading the conditions once the tarmac runs out.

Both licences, every time

The U.S. State Department’s country page sets the rule: “During short-term tourist or business visits, U.S. citizens may drive a vehicle in Gabon provided they have both a valid U.S. and an international driver’s license.” So the International Driving Permit is not optional; get it from AAA or AATA before you fly, since you will not get one locally. The same page says travellers are routinely stopped at police checkpoints in cities and on roads to the interior, so carry your US licence, IDP and passport together. Residents holding a carte de séjour follow a different rule and must get a Gabonese licence or register their US one.

Gabon drives on the right, the same as the United States, so there is no side switch to unlearn. That keeps your attention where it is needed: the surface ahead.

The real preparation: roads, not rules

The rules here are broadly familiar — the challenge is the network. Around Libreville and along a handful of key corridors the roads are paved and manageable. Push beyond them and you meet unsealed routes through dense forest that rut, wash out and flood in the wet season, with long gaps between fuel and help. The State Department recommends four-wheel drive beyond the paved road to Lambaréné, especially in the rainy season, and it is the kind of driving where you carry water, spare fuel and offline navigation rather than trusting a phone signal.

What is honestly not documented

Gabon has no published set of speed limits or fines aimed at tourists — the safe rule is to drive to the road, slow right down on unsealed sections, and avoid driving after dark, when potholes and unlit vehicles are the real hazard. Treat alcohol as zero before driving. The emergency numbers are police and fire 177 and ambulance 117.
