Yes. A valid US licence works for a visit, but France requires it to be in French or carried with an International Driving Permit or official translation. Traffic keeps right, as at home.
An American licence gets you on the road in France, with one piece of paper added. French rules say a licence from outside Europe must be written in French, or carried with an International Driving Permit or an official translation. A US licence is in English, so the IDP is the simple answer: get it in the United States before you fly, because it cannot be issued once you are in France.
Right-hand traffic, familiar habits
France drives on the right, as you do at home, so there is no side switch to learn. The differences are in the details: priorité à droite still applies at some unmarked junctions, where traffic from your right has the right of way, and roundabouts are everywhere.
Alcohol: 0.05, not 0.08
The French limit is 0.5 g per litre of blood, or 0.05 %. Most US states use 0.08. There is no comfortable glass-with-dinner margin. If you are driving, do not drink.
What a speeding ticket costs
Limits are 130 km/h on motorways, 80 km/h on most two-lane rural roads (some departments have restored 90 where signed) and 50 km/h in towns. Article R413-14 of the Code de la route sets the fines. Less than 20 km/h over a limit above 50 km/h is a EUR 68 fixed fine. The same excess on a street limited to 50 km/h or less costs EUR 135, and so does every band from 20 km/h over. From 30 km/h over, the licence can also be suspended.
Equipment and city stickers

Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — France sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF on all four tyres, or snow chains / snow socks carried for two drive wheels; M+S alone no longer accepted (34 departments, signed communes only)
- Studded tyres: restricted
- Penalty: No sanction in force as of 17 Feb 2026 (penalty decree not yet published). Ignoring a B26 chain sign: 2nd-class fine, up to EUR 150. The obligation is enforceable only where B58/B59 signs are installed.
In French the rule is pneus hiver, and snow chains are chaînes à neige — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.
