France on an Indian Licence — The Side Switch, IDP & Autoroute Tolls

France is one of the great self-drive countries, from the Loire châteaux to the Alpine passes. For an Indian visitor two things need settling first, and neither is the rental contract: the document that goes with your licence, and the side of the road.

The permit is part of the licence

Service-Public.fr, the French government’s information site, sets the rule for short stays: a licence from outside Europe is valid only if it is written in French, or is accompanied by an International Driving Permit or an official translation. Indian licences are printed in English and Hindi, so carry the IDP issued by your RTO together with the licence and your passport. It cannot be issued once you are in France. Keeping right

India drives on the left; France on the right. The reversal catches drivers on day one: leaving a car park, a roundabout that now runs anticlockwise, the glance in the wrong direction at a junction. Watch for priorité à droite at unmarked crossroads, where traffic coming from the right goes first. Start on quiet roads, not in central Paris.

The péage

Most French autoroutes are tolled. You take a ticket from the machine on entry, keep it, and pay at the barrier on exit by card or cash. At busy plazas, stay out of lanes marked only with an orange t, which are reserved for electronic tags.

Speeds, fines and alcohol

Limits are 130 km/h on motorways, 80 km/h on most two-lane rural roads (some départements have restored 90 where signed) and 50 km/h in towns. Under article R413-14 of the Code de la route, an excess of less than 20 km/h costs EUR 68 where the limit is above 50 km/h and EUR 135 where it is 50 or less; from 20 km/h over it is EUR 135. The alcohol limit is 0.05%, and 0.02% for new drivers. India’s Motor Vehicles Act sets 30 mg per 100 ml, so the general French line is looser than home, the novice one stricter. Carry a warning triangle and a reflective vest. Emergencies: 112.
