A German EU licence is fully valid in France — no IDP, same side, same 0.05 alcohol limit. The real differences are the Crit'Air sticker needed for city centres, a rural limit of 80 km/h (lower than Germany's 100), and tolled autoroutes.
For a German driver France is about as familiar as a foreign country gets: same side of the road, same 0.05 alcohol limit, an EU licence that needs no IDP and no translation. So this is not a page about learning to drive again — it is about the handful of French-specific rules that quietly catch German visitors.
The rural limit is lower than you expect
France caps most rural roads at 80 km/h, not the 100 you are used to at home, and after the open-ended stretches of the Autobahn the 130 km/h motorway ceiling is a hard limit rather than a suggestion. Crit’Air: the sticker most Germans forget
Unlike Germany’s green Umweltplakette, France uses the Crit’Air system, and the two are not interchangeable. Paris, Lyon, Grenoble, Strasbourg and a growing list of cities are low-emission zones that bar cars without the correct Crit’Air sticker on the windscreen. Order it online before you cross the border — turning up without one risks a fine and you cannot buy it at the boundary.
Tolls and the practicalities
French autoroutes are tolled (péage), paid by card or cash at barriers, which adds up on a long trip south — budget for it rather than being surprised. Your German licence, passport and the car’s papers are all you need at a check. Every vehicle must still carry a warning triangle and reflective vest within reach. The emergency number is 112. Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — France sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF on all four tyres, or snow chains / snow socks carried for two drive wheels; M+S alone no longer accepted (34 departments, signed communes only)
- Studded tyres: restricted
- Penalty: No sanction in force as of 17 Feb 2026 (penalty decree not yet published). Ignoring a B26 chain sign: 2nd-class fine, up to EUR 150. The obligation is enforceable only where B58/B59 signs are installed.
In French the rule is pneus hiver, and snow chains are chaînes à neige — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.
