Can an Indian Drive in Fiji? — Yes, Same Side, No Switch to Learn

For an Indian driver, Fiji is an unusually gentle place to get behind the wheel — and the single reason is the one most travel guides bury. You already drive on the correct side. That removes the hardest part of driving abroad before you even start.

The verdict for Indian licence holders

You can drive in Fiji on your Indian licence, with an International Driving Permit recommended to accompany it. Keep the IDP, your Indian card and your passport together and arrange the permit at home; it cannot be obtained once you have landed in Suva or Nadi. For a standard tourist stay your licence and IDP are all you need.

The big advantage: no side switch

Here is what makes Fiji easy. India drives on the left, and so does Fiji. There is no roundabout flowing the wrong way, no reflex glance in the wrong direction, none of the first-day disorientation that catches Indian drivers in Europe or the Gulf. Your instincts at junctions, on overtakes and at give-way lines all transfer straight across. That frees you to focus on what’s genuinely different: narrow, winding island roads, sudden tropical rain, and the occasional pedestrian, dog or pig at the edge of the carriageway.

Slow roads and a relaxed-looking limit

Speeds are low across the board — 50 km/h in towns, 70 on rural roads and 80 as the top motorway figure, so there is no fast open-road driving to adjust to. The alcohol limit reads as a loose 0.08 BAC, higher than India’s 0.03, but the sensible rule on unlit village roads is zero before you drive. Fuel runs around $1.18/litre and the emergency number is 112. Many of the best beaches and resorts sit off the main routes, so a car genuinely opens the islands up.
