Ethiopia is a rewarding but demanding place to drive, and for an American visitor the rules differ from home in ways the licence question alone won’t tell you.

Can an American licence holder drive in Ethiopia?

For a short visit you can drive on your US licence with an International Driving Permit carried alongside it — the IDP gives officials a recognised translation and smooths a roadside check. For anything beyond a brief trip, Ethiopia commonly expects foreign drivers to hold a local permit, so confirm your situation before an extended stay rather than assume the IDP covers you indefinitely. Arrange the IDP in the US before you fly.

The side of the road is familiar

Ethiopia drives on the right, the same as the United States, so there is no side switch to relearn. Your lane instincts carry over — which is just as well, because everything else about the traffic demands your attention.

The numbers that surprise Americans

Two limits sit well below what a US driver expects. Town speed limits drop to a strict 30 km/h — genuinely slow, and a reflection of how crowded and pedestrian-heavy Ethiopian towns are. Rural roads run to 70 km/h. And the blood-alcohol limit is 0.03, far under the 0.08 of most US states, so the only safe rule is no alcohol before driving. These are not numbers to round up in your head.

The real challenge is the road, not the rules

Ethiopian roads mix fast intercity traffic with pedestrians, livestock, carts and unlit vehicles, and conditions vary sharply once you leave the main corridors. Addis Ababa traffic is dense and assertive; rural driving after dark is best avoided entirely. Drive defensively, keep your speed low through any settlement, and plan long legs for daylight. Fuel runs about $0.82 a litre and the emergency number is 112.
