El Salvador on an Indian Licence — IDP Advised + the Side Switch

El Salvador’s “Surf City” coast and compact size make it a genuinely drivable country, and for Indian visitors the paperwork is simple. What needs real attention is the side of the road and the low town speeds — not the licence.

The verdict for Indian licence holders

You can drive in El Salvador on your Indian licence, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry beside it. The IDP translates your details for police and rental staff and smooths the rental counter. Carry your IDP, Indian licence and passport together, and arrange the IDP in India before departure — you cannot get one once you arrive.

The real adjustment: India drives left, El Salvador drives right

This is the change that demands your attention. India drives on the left; El Salvador drives on the right. The danger window is your first hour — joining a roundabout that now flows the other way, turning across traffic, or a reflex glance in the wrong direction at a junction. Pick up the car somewhere quiet rather than in central San Salvador, and be deliberate at every turn until right-hand traffic stops feeling backwards.

Slow town limits and a near-zero drinking rule

Town speed limits are a low 40 km/h, rural roads 60, and the faster routes around 90 — all lower than Indian highway speeds, so ease off well before you think you need to. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05, marginally above India’s 0.03, but with no practical room: if you are driving, do not drink. Petrol runs about $1.05 a litre, and the emergency number is 911, not the 112 you may default to.
