Egypt on a US Licence — IDP Mandatory & a 0.0 Alcohol Limit

The drive on the right is the same, which lulls American visitors into thinking Egypt will feel familiar. The road rules and the documents are where it diverges, and two of those differences carry real penalties.

You drive on the right — but you still need an IDP

The US and Egypt both drive on the right, so there’s no side switch to relearn. What you do need is paperwork. An International Driving Permit is required by law, carried with your US licence and passport. AAA issues one in roughly 10 days, so handle it before you leave — there’s no way to get it in Egypt. Rental desks in Cairo and the Red Sea resorts won’t release a car without it, and checkpoint police expect all three documents together. The IDP covers stays of up to 3 months.

The alcohol limit is the trap

This is where American habits get expensive. The US works to 0.08; Egypt enforces 0.0, meaning no detectable alcohol at all. There is no equivalent of a beer with dinner before you drive back — if you’re behind the wheel, drink nothing. Penalties include substantial fines and licence confiscation, and the rule is enforced around tourist areas.

Cairo traffic, not the speed limits, is the real test

Speeds are modest — 60 km/h in town, 90 rural, 100 km/h (62 mph) on motorways, only slightly below US interstate norms. The challenge is the driving culture. Lanes are treated as suggestions, the horn replaces the indicator, and gaps vanish the instant they open. Hold a steady, predictable line, signal early, and don’t fight for space. Out on the intercity highways it calms down considerably. A typical over-limit fine runs around EGP 300-500 (roughly $6-10), settled on the spot, and unmarked speed humps catch out the unwary.

Before you collect the car

Fuel is remarkably cheap at about $0.35/litre, so mileage is no concern. Confirm the car carries a warning triangle and fire extinguisher, and save 122 for police.
