Egypt on a Swedish Licence — You Need an IDP, and a Zero Alcohol Limit

Can a Swedish driver legally drive in Egypt? Yes — but not on the Swedish licence alone. Egypt requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) to accompany your national card, and without it you will be turned away at the rental counter and have no valid paperwork at a roadside stop.

One document decides everything

The IDP is simply your Swedish licence translated into a recognised international format, issued by Motormännen or a similar body at home. It must be arranged in Sweden — you cannot buy one after landing. Carry the trio together: Swedish licence, IDP, and passport. Your home licence is good for stays of about three months; beyond that you move into local-licence territory that ordinary visitors rarely need.

The side of the road is familiar

Swedes sometimes brace for a side switch abroad, but Egypt drives on the right — the same as Sweden has since Dagen H in 1967. No reversed roundabouts, no mirrored junctions. That removes one of the biggest hazards travellers face elsewhere and lets you focus on the genuinely unfamiliar part.

The real challenge is the traffic culture

Coming from Sweden’s orderly, lane-disciplined roads, Cairo is a jolt. Markings are loosely observed, gaps are claimed rather than given, and the horn is a constant negotiating signal rather than a rebuke. Speed limits look gentle on paper — 60 km/h urban, 90 rural, 100 on motorways — but it is the flow around you, not the number on the sign, that sets a safe pace. Build in extra following distance and treat your first day as practice.

Alcohol and fines

Egypt’s limit is 0.0 BAC, leaving no room at all, and even tighter than Sweden’s strict 0.02. A small speeding penalty runs about EGP 300-500 (≈ €6-10), paid roadside, while an alcohol offence is far more serious.
