Egypt on a Spanish Licence — Why You Still Need an IDP (Plus a 0.0 Limit)

Driving across Spain or into France, your licence is all you ever show. Egypt is where that changes, and it surprises Spanish visitors who assume an EU document opens every door. It doesn’t here.

The paperwork: an IDP is mandatory

Egypt sits outside the agreements that let a Spanish licence travel solo. You must carry an International Driving Permit with your Spanish licence and passport. Rental companies in Cairo, Luxor and the Red Sea resorts won’t release a car without it, and roadside police expect the full set. Get the IDP through the DGT or a recognised club before you leave Spain — it is impossible to arrange on arrival and remains valid for stays of up to 3 months.

Same side of the road, very different rhythm

Spain and Egypt both drive on the right, so there’s nothing to relearn at the wheel. The adjustment is behavioural. Egyptian traffic, Cairo especially, runs on the horn rather than indicators, lanes are advisory at best, and drivers fill any gap the moment it opens. Coming from Spain’s busy-but-ordered roads, the trick is to hold a predictable line, signal early, and stay calm when cars merge close. Once you’re out on the open highways between cities the pace settles and the stress drops sharply.

Lower speeds, zero tolerance on alcohol

Towns are 60 km/h, rural roads 90, and motorways 100 km/h — slower than you’re used to, and enforced with checkpoints and unmarked humps. Going over typically costs around EGP 300-500 (roughly €6-10), paid on the spot. The non-negotiable rule is alcohol: a 0.0 limit versus Spain’s 0.05 means no drinks at all before driving, and the consequences for getting it wrong are heavy.

Practical notes before you set off

Fuel is genuinely cheap at about $0.35/litre, so distance won’t hurt your wallet.
