Can a South Korean Drive in Egypt? — Yes, but the IDP Is Required + Zero Alcohol

Egypt rewards the patient driver and punishes the timid one. For a South Korean visitor used to orderly, camera-disciplined roads at home, the honest headline is that the paperwork is strict and the traffic is stricter — Cairo in particular is rated among the most challenging driving environments a tourist will meet.

The licence verdict — the IDP is mandatory here

You can drive in Egypt on your South Korean licence only if you also carry an International Driving Permit, and that is a genuine requirement rather than a suggestion. Egypt expects the IDP — a recognised translation of your national licence — in the car with the licence itself and your passport. Your home licence covers stays of up to three months; beyond that you would be into local conversion. Arrange the IDP in Korea before you fly, because it cannot be obtained in Egypt. Zero alcohol — stricter than Korea

Egypt’s blood-alcohol limit is 0.0, tighter than South Korea’s 0.03. There is no margin for a drink with dinner; if you are driving, drink nothing. Penalties are real, and in a country where roadside stops are common it is not a rule to gamble on.

The traffic is the real challenge

Speeds are modest on paper — 60 km/h in town, 90 on rural roads, 100 on motorways — but the numbers tell you little. Drive defensively, expect to be undertaken, and avoid night driving where unlit vehicles and pedestrians are common.
