Can you drive in Egypt on a Norwegian licence?

Yes, with an International Driving Permit, which is required. Your Norwegian licence on its own is not accepted for tourists; you must carry the IDP alongside it plus your passport. Arrange the IDP through NAF (or another authorised issuer) before you fly, because you cannot get one in Egypt. With that in hand, you are legally clear to drive.

The roads are a world away from Norway

Egypt rates as very challenging to drive, and after Norway’s quiet, well-marked, rule-following roads the contrast is dramatic. Lane markings are widely ignored, traffic negotiates right-of-way on the move, and the horn is the main signalling tool — a beep means “I am here,” not aggression. Cairo is the most demanding. A good number of visitors who could legally drive opt for a car-with-driver instead, and on a first trip that is a fair choice.

A flat zero on alcohol

Egypt enforces a 0.0 alcohol limit — zero, even tighter than Norway’s already-strict 0.02. There is no allowance at all; if you are driving, drink nothing.

Speeds, fuel and staying safe

Posted limits are 60 in town, 90 rural and 100 on motorways, though real traffic rarely matches the signs. Fuel is strikingly cheap next to Norwegian prices, around $0.35/litre. Speeding fines are modest — roughly EGP 300-500 (about EUR 6-10) for a small overshoot — but the genuine hazards are junctions, unlit vehicles and pedestrians, especially after dark. Avoid night driving on rural routes and keep plenty of space.
