Egypt on an Indian Licence — A Side Switch, Even for Drivers Used to Chaos

Indian drivers arrive in Egypt better prepared for the chaos than most — dense traffic, assertive merging and constant horns are not new to anyone who has driven in Delhi or Mumbai. But there is one thing your home roads never asked of you, and it deserves real attention.

You switch sides. India drives on the left; Egypt drives on the right. Familiarity with busy traffic can actually make this harder, not easier, because your instincts are strong and they are now pointing the wrong way — the reflex glance, the position in a roundabout, the lane you drift toward when distracted. The danger window is the first day, especially at junctions and when pulling out. Take your first hour somewhere quiet — a resort town rather than central Cairo — and be deliberate about checking left-then-right until “right” stops feeling backwards.

The traffic itself you can read. Egypt’s roads are rated Very Challenging, with loose lanes and horn-based communication, but that grammar is familiar to an Indian driver. Hold a steady line, signal intentions early, and merge with confidence — Egyptian traffic, like Indian traffic, rewards the decisive over the hesitant.

Carry an IDP, and treat alcohol as zero. An International Driving Permit is required alongside your Indian licence; arrange it at home, as it is not issued in Egypt, and it covers stays of up to 3 months. The drink-drive limit is a flat 0.0 BAC — tighter than India’s 0.03 — with no margin and heavy penalties.

Speed limits are modest: 60 km/h in towns, 90 rural, 100 on highways. The real hazards are pedestrians, animals and unlit vehicles after dark, not the posted number, and minor speeding costs about EGP 300-500.
