Can a Brazilian Drive in Egypt? — Yes, but the IDP Is Mandatory

For Brazilian visitors, Egypt is one of the few destinations where the paperwork genuinely is a gating step rather than a formality — and the driving itself, especially in Cairo, asks more of you than the rules suggest.

The verdict: yes, but the IDP is required

A Brazilian licence holder can drive in Egypt, but the International Driving Permit is required, not optional. This is the key distinction. Carry your Brazilian licence, the IDP and your passport as a set; the IDP without your licence, or the licence without the IDP, will not do. Arrange the permit in Brazil before departure — it cannot be issued in Egypt — and your home licence is recognised for stays of up to roughly 3 months.

One less thing to relearn: the driving side

Egypt drives on the right, exactly as Brazil does, so there is no side switch. That spares you the most common tourist tripwire and lets you put your attention where it is actually needed — into the traffic.

A zero alcohol limit you already know

Egypt’s blood-alcohol limit is zero, which will feel familiar: it is the same zero you live with under Brazil’s Lei Seca. No drinking before driving, no margin. One rule that travels with you unchanged.

The real test is the traffic, not the rules

Cairo driving is dense, fast-flowing and improvisational — lane markings are advisory, the horn is a signalling tool, and gaps close quickly. Posted limits run about 60 km/h in town, 90 rural and 100 on motorways, but the limiting factor is the traffic around you, not the sign. Egyptian law expects a warning triangle and fire extinguisher in the car, fuel is cheap at roughly $0.35 a litre, and the police emergency number is 122. A speeding penalty of around EGP 300-500 is paid on the spot.
