Can an American Drive in Ecuador? — Yes, IDP Recommended + a 0.03 Limit

For an American, the licence question in Ecuador has a simple answer — and then a couple of details worth knowing before you collect a car in Quito or head for the coast.

The verdict for US licence holders

You can drive in Ecuador on your American licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended. The law doesn’t always demand one, but rental firms and roadside police prefer to see the IDP next to your US licence, and it spares you an argument. Sort it at home before you fly — you cannot pick one up in Ecuador. Carry the IDP, your US licence and your passport together.

There is one piece of good news for American drivers: Ecuador drives on the right, the same as home. No side switch, no rewiring your instincts at roundabouts — the things that catch out drivers heading to the UK or Japan simply don’t apply here.

The catch most US visitors miss: a 0.03 alcohol limit

The number that surprises Americans is the drink-drive limit of 0.03. That is well under half the 0.08 most US states use, and it leaves no room for “one beer with dinner.” If you are driving in Ecuador, don’t drink at all — the margin you’re used to back home does not exist here.

What the roads actually ask of you

Speed limits run 50 km/h in town, 90 on rural roads and 120 on motorways, broadly in line with what you’d expect. The real challenge is terrain rather than the numbers: Quito sits above 2,800 metres, and routes into the Andes mean steep grades, sharp bends and weather that turns fast. Altitude saps engine power and your own concentration, so build in time and don’t push a tired car uphill.

Fuel is cheap by US standards — around $0.60 a litre — one of the genuine pleasures of a self-drive trip here. The general emergency number is 911, the same digits you dial at home.
