Ecuador is a rewarding self-drive country — the Andes, the coast and the Amazon basin within a compact area — and for British drivers the licence is the simple bit. The adjustments that matter are on the road and at the bar.

The verdict on your UK licence

A British licence holder can drive in Ecuador as a visitor, and an International Driving Permit is recommended. Ecuador is outside Europe and operates in Spanish, so the IDP is the document that translates your UK licence for police and rental desks. Carry it with your licence and passport; sort it in Britain before you fly.

The side switch is the first hurdle

The UK drives on the left; Ecuador drives on the right. This is the single change most likely to catch you out, and the risk window is your first day — pulling out of junctions, joining roundabouts that now flow the other way, and the reflex glance in the wrong direction. Quito sits at altitude with steep streets, so take your opening drives somewhere quiet and deliberate rather than launching into city hills jet-lagged.

A 0.03 alcohol limit — far below home

Ecuador’s blood-alcohol limit is 0.03, well under the UK’s 0.08. There is no “one pint” allowance here; if you are driving, don’t drink. Enforcement is real and penalties are serious. On the open road the limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 rural and 120 on motorways — a touch faster on the motorway than you may be used to, so stay in your comfort zone rather than chasing the limit.

The upside: cheap fuel

One genuine bonus is the price at the pump — fuel runs around USD 0.60 a litre, among the cheaper places you will drive, thanks to domestic subsidies. The emergency number is 911.
