The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a serious self-drive proposition, and most Indian visitors who drive here do so in and around Kinshasa rather than attempting long overland routes. The licence side is simple enough; the roads and the security picture are what demand real preparation.

Can an Indian licence holder drive in DR Congo?

Yes. For a tourist stay your Indian licence is accepted, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. The IDP gives officials a recognised translation and smooths matters at a rental desk or roadside check. Arrange it in India before you travel, and keep it together with your licence and passport.

The two things that actually matter

First, the side switch: India drives on the left; DR Congo drives on the right. Be deliberate at every junction and roundabout for your first day until the new direction stops feeling wrong.

Second, and more important here, road condition. Official limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 100 km/h on the few stretches that qualify — but paved, maintained road is the exception once you leave the capital. Expect potholes, washed-out sections in the rains, informal checkpoints and heavy congestion in Kinshasa itself. Drive to the road, keep documents accessible, and avoid driving after dark.

The drink-drive limit is 0.08, but given the conditions the only sensible figure is zero. Fuel runs about $1.42 a litre and the emergency number is 112.
