Can an American Drive in the Dominican Republic? — IDP Recommended, 0.05 Limit

The Dominican Republic is a comfortable place for an American to drive in one important respect: the traffic is on the right, so there is no mirror-image relearning to do. The friction is everywhere else — the pace of local traffic, the mopeds, and a couple of rules that are stricter than at home.

Can you drive there on a US licence?

Yes. For a tourist trip your American licence is accepted, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. Plenty of rental desks are happy with the US licence alone, but a few ask for the IDP, and police may too, so it is worth the small effort to get one from AAA before you fly. Carry the IDP, your US licence and your passport together.

Speeds are lower than you expect

The motorway limit is a modest 80 km/h, with rural roads at 60 and towns at 40 km/h — well below the highway speeds you are used to in the States. The main toll highways (DR-1, DR-3, Coral) are good, but secondary roads deteriorate quickly, and you will share them with scooters carrying whole families, livestock and the occasional unlit vehicle after dark. Drive defensively and avoid rural night driving where you can.

The alcohol limit is stricter than at home

The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05, below the US 0.08. With busy bar-district roads at night, the only safe rule is zero before driving. Fuel runs about $1.22 a litre, and the emergency number is 911 — the same digits you know, which is one less thing to remember.
