Quick Answer

An Indian licence holder can drive in the Dominican Republic with an International Driving Permit recommended alongside the licence. The two things that actually matter: switching from left- to right-hand traffic, and adjusting to low posted limits (40 in town, 80 on the highway) on roads where motorbikes, potholes and unpredictable overtaking are the real hazard.

The Dominican Republic rewards drivers who want to reach the beaches, mountains and small towns beyond the resort strip. For an Indian visitor the licence rule is easy; the road culture is where the real adjustment lies.

Can you drive on an Indian licence?

Yes. An Indian licence holder can drive in the Dominican Republic, with an International Driving Permit recommended alongside the licence. The IDP is not always demanded by law, but car-hire desks routinely ask for it, and it pre-empts any roadside dispute — an Indian licence in a non-Latin script is far easier to accept when paired with the IDP’s translation. Carry the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport together, and arrange the IDP in India before you travel.

The side switch

India drives on the left; the Dominican Republic drives on the right. This is the single most likely thing to catch you out, and the danger window is your first day — pulling out of a hotel, taking a roundabout that now flows the opposite way, or glancing the wrong direction at a junction. Spend the first hour on quiet roads, not in central Santo Domingo, and stay deliberate at every turn.

The roads, not the speed, are the challenge

Posted limits are low — 40 km/h in towns, 60 km/h on rural roads and 80 km/h on the highways — but the number is rarely what you’re managing. The real hazards are the motoconchos (motorbike taxis) that swarm through gaps, potholes that appear without warning, livestock on rural stretches, and overtaking that can be sudden and close. Keep a generous following distance, expect the unexpected, and avoid unlit rural roads after dark where you can. Fuel runs around $1.22 a litre, and the emergency number is 911.

We won’t quote a standard speeding fine figure here, because the Dominican Republic does not publish a reliable fixed one we can stand behind — assume penalties are handled at the officer’s discretion and carry your documents accordingly.

The right. India drives on the left, so the side switch is the main reflex adjustment for an Indian driver — take your first hour on quiet roads.

It is manageable with caution. The hazards are not speed but density — scooters and mopeds weaving, potholes, and assertive overtaking. Avoid driving at night on unlit rural roads where possible.
