Dominica for UK Drivers 2026: Temporary Local Licence Needed

Dominica, the “Nature Island” (not the Dominican Republic), is all rainforest, hot springs and volcanic ridges. For a British visitor it is one of the easier Caribbean islands to drive. You keep to the familiar side, and the paperwork is handled locally.

The document you actually need

GOV.UK states: “You must show your UK driving licence to get a temporary Dominican driving licence. Car hire companies will usually help with this.” So the UK licence works as proof for a local temporary licence, and that local licence is what lets you drive. GOV.UK also says to arrange car rental before you arrive. When you book, ask the hire company to prepare the temporary licence so you can collect both at the same time.

No side switch

Dominica drives on the left, as the UK does. You will not need to retrain your instincts at junctions or roundabouts.

The terrain is the real test

GOV.UK warns that the roads are sometimes narrow and in poor condition. Pedestrians often walk in the road, other drivers swerve round potholes or pull out without indicating, and there are few road signs, so it is easy to get lost. The main highway from Douglas-Charles Airport is prone to landslides after bad weather and has sheer drops where the road has fallen away. GOV.UK advises avoiding it at night. Use low gears on descents and keep speed down on wet surfaces.

If you have an accident, GOV.UK says to call the police and not to move your vehicle. The emergency number for ambulance, fire and police is 999.
