Quick Answer

American drivers should carry an International Driving Permit in Denmark alongside the home licence — rental desks and police expect it. The drink-drive limit is 0.05, well under the US 0.08, and bridge tolls plus dense speed cameras are the other surprises.

What Tourists Miss

Americans driving in Denmark face EUR 270 fines for 20+ km/h over the limit — the BAC limit is 0.05% (stricter than the US 0.08%) and extensive speed-camera coverage with just 3 km/h tolerance. IDP is strongly recommended; police stops escalate without one.

Denmark is an easy country to drive in for an American — you stay on the right, the infrastructure is superb, and distances are small. But two details trip up US visitors, and both are worth sorting before you collect the car.

Carry an International Driving Permit. Unlike fellow Europeans, Americans are expected to hold an IDP alongside the US licence. It is a certified translation more than a separate licence, but Danish rental desks routinely ask for it and a police stop goes more smoothly with one in hand. Get it from AAA before you leave the States — you cannot obtain it in Denmark, and turning up without one can mean the rental counter declines to hand over the keys.

The alcohol limit is lower than home. Denmark draws the line at 0.05 BAC, below the 0.08 that applies across most US states. That is roughly a single drink of difference, and the Danish police do not treat it casually — penalties climb quickly into heavy fines and licence seizure. The honest advice is to keep it dry whenever you are driving.

The speeds convert to numbers that feel high: motorways at 130 km/h (about 81 mph), towns at 50 km/h (31 mph), rural roads at 80. Denmark leans hard on fixed and average-speed cameras with little tolerance, and drifting 10 km/h over costs around DKK 1,000 (≈ $145). Watch the urban limit especially — 50 km/h comes up faster than the 25-35 mph zones you are used to.

Two more things. Denmark’s cities run on bicycles, and cyclists going straight have priority when you turn right across their lane, so check the right mirror every time. And the islands are linked by toll bridges — budget roughly DKK 250 for the Great Belt and DKK 510 for the Øresund. Fuel is about $2.05/litre and 112 is the emergency line. Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — an International Driving Permit is recommended and most rental companies require it alongside your US licence. Get it from AAA before you fly; it cannot be issued in Denmark.

Check if your licence is valid

Denmark sets 0.05 BAC against the common US limit of 0.08. That is roughly one drink less of margin, and Danish enforcement is strict, so treat it as zero before driving.

Check your blood alcohol limit

No motorway tolls, but two big bridges charge — the Great Belt is about DKK 250 and the Øresund to Sweden around DKK 510 for a car, paid by card at the booth.
