Yes, with an IDP: Czechia expects non-EU drivers to carry one with the licence. Buy the plate-linked e-vignette before any motorway and drink nothing; traffic keeps right as at home.
A US licence alone is not enough in Czechia: carry an IDP with it, buy the e-vignette online before the first motorway, and keep alcohol at zero. Winter tyres are needed in wintry conditions from 1 November to 31 March.
The good news for American visitors is that Czechia drives on the right, so there is no side switch. The catches are paperwork, a motorway toll that is easy to forget, and a drink rule stricter than any US state.
Licence plus permit
Canada’s travel advice says North American drivers must carry an international driving permit in Czechia, and the same applies to a US licence. Czech road law (§104 of Act 361/2000) recognises permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, the kind AAA issues, and a 1949 permit counts for one year from the date of issue. Get it at home before you fly and carry it with your state licence and passport.
The e-vignette
Czech motorways and most expressways require an electronic vignette tied to the registration plate. There is no sticker; you buy it online on the official edalnice.gov.cz portal before joining, and plate-reading cameras check it. If you are renting, ask whether the car already has valid cover. Metric speeds and trams
Junctions and roundabouts will feel natural. What changes is the units: the WHO profile lists 50 km/h in towns, 90 outside them and 130 on motorways, quicker than an interstate’s 70 mph. In Prague and Brno, give trams priority. Fines are often collected on the spot. From 1 November to 31 March, winter tyres are needed whenever conditions are wintry, and headlights must be on at all times.
Zero alcohol
Czechia applies zero tolerance. There is no social-drink allowance as with the US 0.08%; if you are driving, drink nothing.

Winter tyres in Czechia — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are compulsory on fixed dates in Czechia: 1 Nov - 31 Mar (when snow, ice or frost is on the road, or expected en route).
- Legal winter tread minimum: 4 mm (6 mm for vehicles over 3.5 t) — not the 1.6 mm figure most guides quote, which is the year-round minimum.
- Accepted marking: M+S / M.S / M/S / MS (3PMSF not required)
