Cyprus on an Indian Licence — IDP Recommended, No Side Switch

For an Indian driver, Cyprus is a soft landing: it drives on the left, the same as India, so the one thing that usually unsettles people abroad simply is not an issue. The seat is on the same side, the roundabouts flow the way you expect, and overtaking feels natural from the first kilometre. The differences are smaller — paperwork, one piece of kit, and a slightly tighter alcohol limit.

Can you drive on an Indian licence? Yes — carry an IDP

An Indian licence holder can drive in Cyprus for a tourist visit, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with your national licence. Cyprus is an EU member and recognises EU licences outright; as a non-EU visitor, the IDP is the document that translates and validates your Indian licence for a rental desk or a police officer. Bring the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport together, and arrange the permit in India before travelling — it is not issued locally.

The small differences worth knowing

Cyprus shares India’s left-hand driving but tightens a couple of things. The alcohol limit is 0.05 BAC, lower than India’s 0.03 in the headline figure but enforced firmly, so treat driving and alcohol as separate activities. On equipment, a warning triangle is the item the law cares about; a reflective vest, first-aid kit and spare bulbs are worth carrying as well. Being caught without required gear at a roadside check can cost around EUR 50-100.

Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 100 on the motorways — moderate by Indian standards, with active enforcement on the main routes between Nicosia, Limassol and the coast. The motorways are good; the mountain roads up into the Troodos are narrow and winding, so adjust your pace there.

Fuel sits near EUR 1.48 a litre, and the general emergency number is 112. Distances are short and the road network is well signposted in English as well as Greek, which makes navigation straightforward.
