Can an Indian Drive in Curaçao? — IDP Advised + a Switch to the Right
India
Curaçao
An Indian licence holder can drive in Curaçao, and an International Driving Permit is recommended — desks and police on this Dutch Caribbean island expect to see one alongside your Indian licence. The main thing to manage is the side of the road: you switch from driving on the left in India to driving on the right in Curaçao.
Curaçao is a compact Dutch Caribbean island, and a hire car is the natural way to string together the coves, the dive sites and Willemstad’s painted waterfront. For an Indian visitor the paperwork is light; the one thing that takes real concentration is flipping which side of the road you belong on.
The verdict for Indian licence holders
You can drive in Curaçao on your Indian licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended. It is not always demanded, but rental desks and police prefer the translated permit, and it removes any argument at a checkpoint. Carry the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport together, and arrange the permit in India before you travel — you cannot get one on the island.
The biggest adjustment: switching to the right
India drives on the left; Curaçao drives on the right. This is the single change most likely to trip you up, and the risk is highest in your first hours — pulling out of the rental lot, joining a roundabout that now flows the opposite way, or instinctively checking the wrong mirror. Take an easy first drive away from Willemstad’s one-way grid until right-hand driving stops feeling reversed.
Alcohol and the roads
The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05, which is actually looser than India’s 0.03 — but do not read that as room to relax. The island’s roads are narrow in places, scooters and pedestrians appear after dark, and a single hire car incident can ruin a short trip, so treat driving as a no-alcohol activity. Beyond that, conditions are generally good on the main routes; the back roads toward the western beaches can be rough and unsigned, so drive to the surface rather than any assumed limit, since posted speeds are inconsistent away from the main roads.
Confirm what you need before collecting the car with the Driving Permit Checker, and if you want the broader rules, the Curaçao driving guide covers them. The emergency number is 911; save it before you set off.

Curaçao drives on the right. Coming from India, where traffic is on the left, this is your main adjustment — be deliberate at junctions and roundabouts for the first day.
0.05 BAC. That is higher than India's 0.03, but on a small island with tourist traffic and night-time scooters the safe approach is not to drink before driving.
