Quick Answer

An American licence holder can drive in Cuba, but should carry an International Driving Permit alongside the US licence — rental agencies expect it. The good news is no side switch (Cuba drives on the right, like the US); the catch is a near-zero 0.0 blood-alcohol limit, far stricter than the US 0.08.

Driving yourself around Cuba is the classic way to reach the valleys, beaches and small towns the tour buses skip. For an American visitor the licence question is straightforward, but two things deserve attention before you turn the key — one legal, one cultural.

Can you drive on a US licence?

Yes — an American licence holder can drive in Cuba, and you should carry an International Driving Permit alongside your US licence and passport. Cuban rental agencies routinely ask for the IDP, and it spares you any argument at the desk. Arrange it at home before you fly. Worth saying plainly: the IDP only covers the driving; the separate US rules on travel to Cuba are a matter to settle before the trip, not at the rental counter.

The limit that catches Americans out: zero alcohol

The single biggest difference from home is alcohol. Cuba runs a 0.0 blood-alcohol limit — effectively a total ban — against the 0.08 that is standard across US states. There is no “one mojito with lunch” allowance here. If you are driving, don’t drink at all; the gap between the two countries’ rules is wide enough to catch a relaxed visitor off guard.

No side switch — but the roads change the game

Cuba drives on the right, the same as the US, so there is nothing to relearn about which lane you belong in. What changes is the road itself. Limits are modest — 50 km/h in towns, 60 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on the autopista — but the real hazards are potholes, unlit vehicles, cyclists, animals and people walking on the shoulder, especially after dark. Avoid driving at night where you can, and slow well below the posted number on anything outside the main highway. Fuel runs around $1.10 a litre and can be in short supply, so fill up whenever you find a working station rather than waiting.

The emergency number is 911. Before you collect the car, check your documents with the Driving Permit Checker and read the local rules on our Cuba driving guide.
