Croatia for French Drivers — No IDP, No Vignette, but Mind the A1 Tolls

Of all the things that catch tourists out in Croatia, almost none of them apply to a French driver. You stay on the right, your EU licence needs no permit, the alcohol limit is the same 0.05 you live with at home, and you are already fluent in the one system that surprises other nationalities — distance-based motorway tolls. That actually makes the trip easy to plan; the detail worth knowing is the coast run itself.

The A1 is a French-style toll road — with summer queues

Croatia tolls its motorways exactly the way France tolls its autoroutes: you take a ticket at the entry barrier, drive, and pay by distance at the exit. No vignette sticker, no flat fee. Prices are in euros since 2023, so there is no currency to puzzle over. What is different is the seasonal load. The A1 from Zagreb down to Zadar, Šibenik and Split is the single artery to the Dalmatian coast, and in late July and August its exit booths back up badly — budget an extra half hour and use the manual lanes unless your rental carries an ENC electronic tag.

Speeds, alcohol and the old towns

The numbers track France closely. Town is 50 km/h, the open road 90 (against France’s 80), and the motorway 130 — the same ceiling as the A7. The alcohol limit is 0.05, identical, so there is nothing to relearn there; just be aware that summer evening checks on the coast road are intensive. The genuine friction is congestion, not law: Dalmatian old towns like Split, Trogir and Dubrovnik have tight, one-way medieval streets, so park outside the walls and walk.
