Costa Rica on a Swedish Licence — No IDP, Just Your Licence and a 4x4

Can a Swedish licence holder drive in Costa Rica?

Yes — and you do not need an International Driving Permit. A Swedish licence is accepted on its own for a tourist stay; just carry your passport with it. Both Sweden and Costa Rica drive on the right, so there’s no side switch. With the paperwork sorted in a sentence, your attention is free for the part that matters.

Book the right vehicle

Costa Rica’s roads earn a moderate difficulty rating. The scenic routes — to the Pacific beaches, the volcanoes, the Monteverde cloud forest — are often narrow, steep and potholed, with single-lane bridges where you yield to oncoming cars and unpaved stretches that ford shallow rivers in the wet season. A cheap saloon will technically reach some of these places and strand you at others; a 4x4 with decent clearance is the rental most experienced visitors choose. Budget extra time too: distances are short on the map but slow on the ground.

Speed, alcohol and fines

Limits are low and well suited to the terrain: 40 km/h in towns, 60 rural, 100 on the few motorway-grade roads. The alcohol limit is 0.05, far above Sweden’s strict 0.02, but it is enforced and the penalties climb — keep your Swedish habit of none-before-driving. A speeding fine for about 10 km/h over is CRC 53,000 (≈ EUR 95). The emergency number is 911, and fuel runs near $1.28/litre.
