For a Swedish driver, Costa Rica’s paperwork takes one sentence: bring your licence and your passport. The decisions that matter are the car you book and how you plan the days, because the roads take longer than the map suggests.
Can a Swedish licence holder drive in Costa Rica?
Yes, and no International Driving Permit is needed. Tourists may drive on their home licence for the length of stay granted on the entry stamp, up to 180 days, as the UK and Canadian governments both explain for their citizens. This rests on Costa Rica’s own practice, not on a treaty: Costa Rica signed the 1968 Vienna convention but never ratified it and is not a party to the 1949 Geneva one, so neither convention binds it. You must carry the original passport while driving, since photocopies are not accepted and officers can fine you for missing documents. Traffic keeps to the right, as in Sweden. Book the right vehicle
Main routes are generally in good condition, but heavy rain in the wet season causes potholes and landslides that can close roads. Many roads narrow to a single lane at bridges, and other drivers speed and overtake carelessly. A car with good clearance, often a 4x4, is the safer choice for routes to beaches, volcanoes and the cloud forest. Do not bring or hire a right-hand-drive car, as these are illegal and do not qualify for local insurance.
San José, accidents and alcohol
Private cars may enter central San José only on certain weekdays, depending on the last digit of the plate, so ask the hire firm which day yours is barred. After an accident with injuries, or when the other driver disputes blame, do not move the car until traffic police arrive. Call the traffic police and the insurer straight away.
